Grow Old = Grow Cold?

Let us be honest – growing old comes with its quicks. Your day is peppered with the creaking of your knees. Naps become sacred. You sleep earlier but you sleep less. You go upstairs to your room, and you forget why you are there. You fire up Chrome to do a Google search but for the life of you, you cannot remember what you want to search. Does growing older mean our faith has to grow colder? Absolutely not!

Jesus told us to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” He did not say “until retirement.” Our passion for Christ should keep burning, no matter what our age is. Caleb was eighty-five when he was ready to take on the giants! If Calen can press on at that age, we have no excuse to coast through life on spiritual autopilot.

When we were younger, we said we would serve God later. We want to focus on our study, then our career, then our family. When we get older, we say let the young people do it. When do we serve the Lord?

How do we keep the fire burning? Stick to the Word of God. Pray without ceasing. Pray like you mean it. Fellowship with fellow Christians who encourage and challenge you. Share your faith – even if it is just a kind word to a neighbour or a prayer for a friend. Most important of all, never lose your sense of wonder for God’s goodness.

Come to God today. You may be a step or three slower. Your mind takes longer to laser in on an idea. You do not see so clear. You do not hear so clear. However, your heart can still burn bright for Jesus!

Let us grow old but never grow cold. Keep the fire going. The best is yet to come!
