It is so easy to get caught up in the temporary things in life – career goals, financial security, social status. As Christians, we must ask ourselves: are we living for what will last forever?
The temporary thrill – the oh-so-sweet soft drinks, the highly salted snacks, the tasty fast good – grants immediate gratification to our taste buds. However, the long-term effect of excessive consumption is the destruction of our health.
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor 4:18)
Paul challenges us to shift our focus. Are we investing more in things that will fade away or in things that will last for eternity, for example, our relationship with God, acts of love, and salvation of souls?
Jesus warned against storing up treasures on earth. He urged us instead to lay up treasures in heaven. (Mt 6:19-20) This does not mean we should neglect our responsibilities on earth. It does mean that our hearts should be set on things above, not just on earthly achievements.
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” ~Jim Elloit.
Think for a moment. Where is your heart? Do you give priority to the temporal over the eternal? We will be wise to live with eternity in mind. We want to stand before God and be glad that we have invested our lives in what truly matters.
