Some days feel like sailing endlessly through open sea. No land in sight, no birds in the sky – just water (lots of them!), wind (sometimes gentle, sometimes furious), and waiting. You row, you rest, you watch, you hope. You look hard to determine whether you really see land, or you just imagine it. The horizon never changes.
That’s where I find myself – adrift in uncertainty. Tired, searching, unsure if I’m getting closer to anything solid. And yet, I’m not alone in this boat.
In Mark 4, the disciples were caught in a storm, waves crashing over their boat. Jesus was there – sleeping. They panicked. He stood, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still.” And just like that, the storm obeyed. Do we hope to be able to sleep in the storm?
We serve that same Jesus. The One who commands the wind and waves. So even when the storm rages and the sky looks empty, we can trust: He is in the boat. He sees. He knows.
Land may be out of sight – for now – but it’s not out of reach. And the sea that covers 70% of the surface of the earth, for all its chaos, cannot shake the one who trusts the Captain.
So, we hold on. We rest when we can. We pray through the night. The sea will not last forever. The storm will pass. And when the land appears, it will be exactly where God intended all along.
Until then, we trust.
