Minimalists tell us to group our possessions into three categories: essentials, non-essentials, and junk – and then deal with them accordingly.
It’s a principle of freedom. Clutter steals space. It clouds our vision. And the same is true for our spiritual lives.
What are we carrying around in our minds every day?
Is it God’s Word – our essential nourishment?
Or are we overloaded with non-essentials like distractions, worries, endless scrolling?
Worse still, are we hoarding junk – bitterness, comparison, fear, pride?
If we are not careful, what fills our heads starts to feed our hearts. And before long, our spirits grow heavy… not because of what God placed there, but because of what we refused to let go.
Jesus invites us to travel light. To store up treasures in heaven, not clutter on earth. He wants us to renew our minds, not to rent out space to everything that screams for our attention.
Today, take inventory.
Hold your thoughts up to the light.
Ask yourself, is this essential to my walk with God?
If not, then maybe it is time to let it go.
What is taking up the most space in your spirit – is it bringing you closer to Jesus … or further away?
