Love Protects

I’ve been a little forgetful lately – nothing serious, just small absent-minded moments. I always a bit of bread with Ben. He gets the first bite. He always waits patiently, eyes full of trust, not knowing if the bread has something in it that might harm him.

Because of that, I’ve stopped buying bread with chocolate or raisins. And I no longer keep grapes in the house. These small, seemingly harmless treats are dangerous for dogs. One careless moment could do more damage than I can bear to imagine. And, I do not trust my mind.

So, I change my habits. No one told me to, but because I love him. I want to make our home safe – even if it means giving up something I enjoy.

And in that simple act, I saw a glimpse of God’s love.

How many times does he ask us to give something up – not to punish us, but to protect us? How often does he lead us away from what’s sweet but harmful? How much did he love us that he gave us his only son?

“(love) always protects” (1 Cor 13:7)

Sometimes, the greatest acts of love are not what we give, but what we’re willing to give up.
