Is a lie ever harmless? It may look small, but like a spark in dry grass, it spreads until it burns down everything.
That is why Scripture is blunt: “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” (Col. 3:9–10).
Truth is not a something we bend to our advantage. Truth is a Person — Jesus Christ himself, who said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6).
When we twist truth for convenience, we dishonour his name. When we speak half-truths to protect ourselves, we plant seeds of deception. When we gossip, exaggerate, or shade reality for our benefit, we open the door for distrust to grow.
How often have you heard, “Even if it’s not true, there is no harm trying. Sharing is caring.”
The enemy has always been a liar (John 8:44). And every time we choose deception, big or small, we are stepping onto his ground.
But the call of God’s people is different. We speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15), we let our “yes” be yes and our “no” be no (Matt. 5:37) and we live with integrity so that our words and lives bear witness to Christ.
Truth is not something to twist. It is something to live by. And when we honour truth, we honour the one who is truth.
