Closing the Door

Decades ago, when we lived in D’man Crimson, we once had visitors from church. A friend brought along someone I didn’t know. To my shock, that guest casually picked up and pocketed the money we left on the tables and counters. I looked at my friend; she looked back with the same stunned expression. Later, she apologized, embarrassed and surprised by her companion’s behaviour.

I often think about that moment when I consider social media. Every day it comes knocking at the door of our hearts and minds. Some posts bring joy, encouragement, and connection. But others carry poison: gossip, slander, outrage, endless complaints that slowly drain us.

Think of your own home – would you let a stranger walk in without asking who they are? Of course not. You guard the door. You decide who is welcomed. Shouldn’t our hearts deserve the same care?

I have learned that I do not have to admit everyone. I do not have to let toxic voices take up space inside me. If I do, they clutter the soul, steal peace, and drown out God’s gentle whisper. Sometimes protecting peace is not about arguing or resisting – it is simply about closing the door.

“Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalm 34:14). Peace is not accidental; it is guarded.

So today, I choose not to scroll every post. I choose not to let in poison. I choose to close the door – so the home of my heart remains a dwelling place for God, not a dumping ground for the world.
