When We Differ with Other Christians

There was a time when the thing I feared most was gangsters. I worried I might meet some on the street and get into trouble. Today, I think my greatest fear is engaging people with very different opinions.

The news of Charlie Kirk’s assassination has stirred up strong emotions. Polarised reactions are not surprising in America, where the political and cultural divide runs deep. Some view him as a bold voice for truth and values they cherish. Others question his motives and methods. These differences remind us how fractured our times have become.

As Christians, it can be discouraging when fellow believers do not see eye to eye with us about someone we admire or about issues close to our hearts. Yet the word of God calls us to a higher perspective. No servant of God is perfect. None of us sees the whole picture. Only God knows the heart.

Years ago, I would have been quick to argue and unsheathe my sword. “You want a fight? Then a fight you will get.” But I have learned to lay that sword down. Grace is the better way. We can quietly bear witness to what we have seen in a life that encouraged us to be more faithful to Christ. At the same time, we must keep our eyes on Jesus, who is the true centre of our faith.

“By their fruits you shall know them.” (Matthew 7:16)

In the end, it is not about defending every worker in the vineyard. It is about recognising fruit where it is present, walking humbly, remaining salt and light, and leaving final judgement in the hands of the Lord. Our labour for him is never in vain.

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, help me to walk humbly, to offer grace when opinions differ, and to keep my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of my faith. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
