Jesus said, “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19).
Light reveals what was hidden. It exposes what we would rather keep covered. That is why people resist it. Darkness feels safer – until it destroys.
Jesus is the light of the world. When he walked the earth, his words and actions exposed hypocrisy, greed, and hidden sin. That is why the self-righteous leaders hated Him. Sinners either humbled themselves in repentance or turned away in anger. His light left no room for pretending.
And it is the same today. If you follow Christ, his light in you will sometimes make others uneasy. You do not even have to say a word – your integrity in the workplace, your refusal to laugh at sin, your commitment to holiness, your quiet trust in God – these things shine. Brightly. But that very light can stir resentment because it reminds people of what they would rather ignore.
So do not be surprised if you face pushback. Do not be surprised if others avoid you, dismiss you, or even lash out at you. Remember: their issue is not with you; it is with the light of Christ in you.
Here is the encouragement: darkness cannot overcome the light. No amount of rejection, hostility, or mockery can put out what Jesus has lit within you. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not – and never will – overcome it (John 1:5).
So, keep shining. Do not dim the light to make others comfortable. Do not hide it out of fear. Shine with humility, grace, and courage, trusting that God can use even the faintest glow to draw hearts to him.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father,
You are the light of the world. When your light exposes my own darkness, give me humility to repent. When your light through me stirs resistance, give me patience to endure. Let my life shine so that others may see you, not me. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
