Jesus told His disciples, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:18–19).
To follow Jesus is to be set apart. This is the reality of discipleship. It is not optional. The world is proud, promote itself, and compromises. Jesus calls his people to humility, obedience, and holiness. The world prizes vengeance and self-preservation. Jesus commands forgiveness and sacrificial love. That difference is not always admired but often rejected.
The cost of being different can sometimes be light – being overlooked, dismissed, or ridiculed. Other times, it is heavy – losing friendship, opportunities, or even freedom. There are times some even lose lives. All over the world today, many believers bear scars, prison sentences, or lay in graves because they chose to stand with Jesus than blend in with the world.
It may be easier to hide, to blend in, to keep quiet and avoid attention. However, Jesus did not rescue us to make us invisible. He chose us to be salt and light, a people who live openly for him, no matter the cost. We are convicted to confess our faith.
Yes, being different will cost you. But do not forget what you gain. You gain the joy of belonging to Christ. You gain the assurance of being chosen. You gain the eternal reward that far outweighs the temporary pain of rejection.
So do not fear being different. Embrace it. Stand firm in it. For when the world sees a believer who refuses to compromise, it sees a glimpse of a kingdom that cannot be shaken.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, you have set me apart in Christ. When I feel the weight of rejection, remind me that I belong to you. Strengthen me to live boldly, even when it costs me. May my life point others to the kingdom that cannot be shaken. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
