“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Ps 34:18)
There are moments when life feels too heavy. You wonder if anyone notices your quiet struggle, if anyone sees you at all. You may not say it out loud, but deep inside, you ache for someone to care.
In those moments, it helps to understand the difference between self-pity, self-compassion, and self-love.
Self-pity traps us in sorrow. It says, “No one understands, no one cares, and I will never get out of this” and leaves us alone with our pain. It keeps us in the dark.
Self-compassion begins to lift us. It says, “I am hurting, and it is all right to feel this way. I will get better.” It opens a door for healing without shame.
Self-love leads us forward. It says, “I matter enough to care for myself and to reach out – to God and to others. I want to get better.” It gives us the courage to connect and to live again.
If you feel unseen today, remember this: the storm will pass. The sun will shine again. Someone is waiting to listen, to share, to care. Not everyone invites you out to sell you something. God is always there. So, is your dog if you have one.
Take one small step. Send a message. Make a call. Go for a walk with a friend. Speak to God about how you feel. You are not forgotten. You are loved.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, thank you for being near even when I feel alone. Teach me to treat myself with kindness, to open my heart, and to reach out to others. Remind me that pain does not last forever, and your light will shine again. I pray in the name of Jesus, amen.
