“In quietness and trust is your strength.” – Isaiah 30:15
Poise. It sounds like such a graceful word – steady hands, slow breathing, a calm heart. But it is hardest to hold when life feels like chaos. Players of Elden Ring may have a slightly different understanding of poise.
Some mornings, I think I have everything under control. Then something small happens – a car that will not start, a leaky roof, an increase of 400g in my weight – and my peace wavers. It is strange how quickly the calm can slip away.
But I am learning that poise is not about pretending everything is fine. It is not about forcing stillness. Poise comes from trust – the quiet knowing that God is here, even when the storm is not over.
Often when I walk Ben in the park, I observe the trees. Even in strong wind, the taller ones sway but do not fall. (Well, most of them do not. The one or two that fell cause great damage.) They shake with the breeze, but their roots keep them steady. That, I think, is poise – not stiffness, not fear, but strength with grace.
Life will always have its gusts and shakes. But when our hearts rest in God, we can move with the wind and still stand tall.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, teach me to find peace in you. When life feels loud and uncertain, quiet my spirit. Let trust be my strength and peace be my posture. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
