Standing Steady #3 – Posture: How You Carry the Weight

“Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.” – Psalm 24:7

I have added weightlifting to my daily workout regime. Jesse always reminds me to keep the right posture.

When we think of posture, we often picture our shoulders – whether we slouch or stand straight. I want to talk about posture being the condition of the heart.

There are days I catch myself bent under invisible weight. Not from what I carry in my hands, but from what I carry inside – memories, worries, the ache of missing Kathleen, the loneliness. My body moves, but sometimes my spirit stoops.

Posture, I am learning, is not about denying that weight. It is about how we hold it. When we lift our hearts toward God, even pain can become an offering. We do not stand tall because life is light. We stand tall because grace holds us up.

I think of Ben when he senses my sadness. He walks closer, sniffing, putting a paw on my legs, quiet but nearby. His gentle presence reminds me – I am not carrying this alone. I am never alone. God is with me.

So, I straighten my heart again. Shoulders back. Eyes lifted. Hope held close. The King of glory enters where we make room for Him – even in weariness (and seeming loneliness).

I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, help me to carry the weight of life with grace. When I feel heavy, I want to lift my eyes to you. Teach me to stand with humility and hope, trusting that you walk beside me. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
