They landed long ago. Not with lights or fire, but with an idea. “We will not destroy them,” said the first. “We will make them forget how to live.”
And so they began.
The first gift was convenience. Machines to think, tools to count, screens to remember. The humans smiled. They no longer had to read or recall; their devices did it for them. Minds softened, attention thinned, and imagination dimmed.
Next came connection. The internet linked everyone to everyone, yet no one truly met. They spoke without listening, reacted without thinking, and laughed without joy. The Visitors watched with quiet satisfaction. “See how they drift apart,” one whispered. “They think they are closer than ever.”
Then came power. The humans no longer sought wisdom, only wealth. They measured worth by what could be bought. Love was traded for influence. Truth was replaced by trend. The Visitors called it progress.
The finishing touch was dependence. Machines began to think for them, write for them, even feel for them. The humans called it artificial intelligence. The Visitors called it the harvest.
Now, the world hums but does not breathe. Faces glow blue in the night. Conversations fade into clicks.
“They are ready,” said the first Visitor.
“Yes,” said the other. “They will not resist. They will not even notice.”
And somewhere in that silence, a human heart still flickers – remembering, faintly, what it meant to be alive.
Reflection
This is our reminder to return – to think, to love, to feel, to pray. The soul is not sustained by screens but by spirit.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, awaken my heart. Break my dependence on what dulls my mind and divides me from other souls. Teach me again to live with wonder, truth, and love. Transform me by renewing my mind. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
