Day and Night

Does the mind ever rest? It works through the noise of the day and keep going in the quiet of the night. The question is not whether our minds are active. It is what we allow in.

Our inner life is not random. It grows from whatever we choose to plant. It becomes what we choose to feed it. Paul puts it plainly: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2). This is not theory. It is guidance for daily life. What we set before our eyes shapes our thoughts, and our thoughts shape our steps.

The things we let in often feel harmless. A cynical voice. A harsh headline. A habit of scrolling that leaves our spirit heavy. None of these seem like much, but over time they form the tone of our days. And that tone follows us into the night. It influences our rest, our mood, and even our relationship with God.

However, there is hope. We are not helpless. God gives us the ability to guard our minds and choose what honours him. We can decide which voices get our attention. We can slow down long enough to notice what strengthens our faith and what weakens it. We can choose to fill our days with truth, gratitude, and reminders of God’s steady presence.

Set the first minutes of your morning aside for him. Protect the last moments of your night. Let his Word be the light that cuts through the noise. These simple choices shift the whole day. What we welcome into our minds during the day becomes the script we replay at night, and that script shapes the way we live and trust.

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, teach me to guard my mind with wisdom and grace. Help me choose what leads me closer to you and turn away from what pulls me off course. Fill my days and nights with your peace and let your Word guide my thoughts. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
