As a new year begins, many of us think about New Year resolutions. Out with the old and in with the new. As we draw near to the end of the year, whatever plans we made in the beginning of the year are wiped clean. We make new plans. We resolve to read more, exercise regularly, eat healthy, get enough sleep, or manage our time better. These goals are not wrong. However, they often rely too heavily on motivation, which fades quickly.
Therefore, the Bible invites us to start somewhere deeper.
Why New Year Resolutions Often Fail
Most New Year resolutions focus on self-effort. We depend on discipline, energy, and willpower. When life becomes busy or discouraging, those resolutions slowly slip away.
In contrast, God calls us to commitment rather than perfection. When we bring our plans before Him, He reshapes our desires and strengthens what truly matters. Sometimes He establishes our goals. Other times, He gently redirects them.
Putting Faith at the Heart of Our Plans
A Christian approach to New Year resolutions includes spiritual practices alongside practical goals. For example, a simple Bible reading plan, a daily prayer habit, or regular times of reflection can anchor the year.
Moreover, small and consistent steps often matter more than ambitious plans. Reading a short passage of Scripture daily can shape the heart over time. Faith grows quietly through steady attention.
Grace for Missed Days and New Beginnings
Even with the best intentions, routines will be interrupted. Missed days are inevitable. Still, God’s grace remains constant. Each day offers a fresh opportunity to begin again.
Ultimately, our hope is not in perfect follow-through but in a faithful God who walks with us throughout the year.
A Short Prayer
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, as I make plans for this year, help me commit them to You. Teach me to trust Your guidance, rely on Your grace, and walk faithfully each day. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
