“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” (Ps 107:1)
Reflection and Review: Learning a Thankful Heart
The Bible often reminds us to count our blessings. When we do this daily, we begin to notice how full life already is. Gratitude does not deny difficulty. Instead, it changes how we see what God has placed before us.
During my high school years, a senior in our Christian fellowship was once asked what he wanted from God. I expected answers like good grades, a happy family, or financial success. Instead, he said he wanted a grateful heart. At the time, I was surprised. Years later, I understood why.
When Contentment Is Learned the Hard Way
I once had a boss who told me that if I spent less than I earned, I would be happy. The logic was simple. Still, armed with a credit card, I spent money I had not yet earned. I wanted more. I focused on what I lacked instead of what I had. As a result, joy slowly disappeared.
God taught me difficult lessons. I was stubborn and self-directed. I worked hard and earned well, yet there was never enough because contentment was missing.
Later, I changed to a job that paid one third of my previous salary. Life had to slow down. Adjustments were necessary. Surprisingly, I discovered I needed far less than I thought.
Counting What Truly Matters
Over time, my focus shifted. “The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1). That simple truth changed everything.
As I grow older, I am thankful for what once seemed ordinary: family, friends, church, health, simple meals, rest, and the ability to move freely. These are quiet gifts of grace.
So, as the year draws to a close, pause and reflect.
What are you thankful for?
A Short Prayer
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, teach me to count my blessings and to see Your goodness in my everyday life. Shape my heart with gratitude and help me rest in what You have already provided. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
