This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.

The rain had stopped, leaving the park under a heavy, silver mist. Logan and the black dog found themselves in the park. Logan walked with the black dog, their rhythmic footsteps the only sound against the jogger’s path and the damp earth. Usually, this was their sanctuary, but tonight, the air felt thick and charged.

The Moment of Friction

The black dog stood frozen, his muscles taut, refusing to move. Logan, tired and damp, reached out to give the familiar, firm pat on the hindquarters – a gesture of “let’s go” they had shared a thousand times.

But the world shifted. In a blur of shadow and teeth, the dog snapped. It wasn’t a hunt; it was a reflex, a sudden break in the mental tether that bound them. Fangs grazed Logan’s wrist, the sharp sting of betrayal hitting harder than the physical pain.

The Silent Aftermath

They stood in the moonlight, breathing hard. Logan held his arm, watching the dog’s ears slowly flatten in a silent apology. There was no growling now, only a profound, vibrating sadness between them. The bond wasn’t broken, but it was bruised. They walked home in a silence that felt heavier than the rain clouds, two souls grappling with the reality that even the deepest love has its jagged edges.

The Long Wait

At the clinic, the fluorescent lights felt clinical and cold compared to the warmth of the dog’s fur. Logan sat on a hard plastic chair, relaying what happened to his son 7500km away. The doctor, a locum, was treating a man with a cut arm from fall. The cut needed stitches and the doctor was working on it.

The wait was agonizing, not because of the wound, but because Logan’s mind was back at the house, wondering if the black dog was curled by the door, waiting for a forgiveness that Logan might not have given clearly.

The Path to Healing

When the doctor finally cleaned the graze and administered the tetanus shot, the physical sting was a relief. It was a tangible solution to a messy night. Logan went home to find the black dog vomited. He cleaned it up and spoke forgiveness softly to the black dog, assuring him of his love. He prayed for him to get well.

He then pondered the lessons learned.

Understand the Trigger

Recognize that even the most loyal companions have “off” days or hidden pains. Do not take things for granted.

Restore the Routine

Healing the bond requires returning to a place of safety and predictable behaviour. It takes one to initiate this. Take the first step in reconciliation if we treasure the relationship.

Give it Time

Trust is a living thing; it needs a quiet space to regrow after a fracture. If at first it does not work, give it time.
