The Dental Waiting Room Illusion
I sit in the dental clinic, breathe in the antiseptic smell, grab a magazine, and walk right back out without ever opening my mouth for the doctor. Legally and technically, I visited the dentist. Practically, any problems with my teeth remain untreated. Motion is not the same as progress. When it comes to our daily walk with God, it is remarkably easy to fall into the trap of the spiritual checklist.
What the Bible Says About Empty Routine
Look at the religious leaders in Jesus’ time – the Pharisees. They knew the scriptures inside and out, prayed on street corners, and kept strict religious regimes. Yet, Jesus pulled back the curtain on their routine in Matthew 15:8-9: “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” They checked every box, but the connection was dead.
God Wants Intimacy, Not an Audit
God is not an auditor checking off your daily Bible-reading streaks or tallying prayer minutes. He is a Father who wants intimacy, not compliance. He desires a real exchange where we actually listen to His voice, let Him search our hearts, and allow Him to fix what is broken. A checklist cannot heal a soul.
What Real Devotion with God Looks Like
Stop rushing through spiritual disciplines just to clear your conscience for the day. Slow down the audio (if you have listening to the Bible at 1.5x speed, consider switching it back t 1x), turn off the autopilot, and actually invite God into the mess. It is better to read three verses and ponder them deeply than to speed-read five chapters just to say you finished.
Today’s Truth
Religious activity without an open heart is just spiritual theatre.
True devotion is measured by intimacy with God, not the completion of a spiritual checklist.
A Prayer to Slow Down
Father, forgive me for treating my time with You like a task to cross off my list. Slow me down. Strip away my rush to finish, and teach me how to sit in Your presence, listen to Your voice, and let You truly transform me today. Amen.
