Good day. We are in progress with the 2024 DUMC Bible Reading Plan. Today, we read 1 Sam 28. King Saul was desparate. He was terrified of the Philistine army. He could not get any direction from God. Yes, he was desparate, so desparate he went to witchcraft for answer. He, who banned witchcraft in the kingdom, sought answer from witchcraft. By doing so, he crossed the line of no return. When push comes to shove, Saul lost it.
We are not going to discuss whether that was Samuel and how could the witch summon Samuel. That is another discussion. We will focus on what Saul did.
Trust God. Always. God spoke to Saul through Samuel. With Samuel no longer around, Saul did not get any word from the Lord. In his fear and uncertainty, he turned where he should not have turned to. God wants to guide us, in good times or bad. Look to God. Cry out to God. Do not turn left or right.
Desperation Does Not Justify Disobedience. But, there were to many of them (the Philistine soldiers)! It is impossible to close the deal without the “extra perks”. I needed to do this. I had no choice. No, you did not have to do this, you chose to do it. No, you had choices, you chose this one. It is often we are placed in stressful, tensed, and difficult situations. However, desparation does not excuse disobedience. There is always a way out that honours God. Choose that one.
Do Not Always Take Shortcuts. The medium seems an acceptable quick solution. Hey, I could get no answer, I will get an answer in my own way. This quick solution led Saul further and further away from God. Be very careful of the choices we make.
