Greetings, my dear readers. 1 Kings 2 consists of two parts. One, at the end of his life, David gave his last instruction to Solomon, his son. Two, Solomon’s first act as the king.
“Keep the charge of the Lord your God: Walk in obedience to him and keep his decrees, commands, laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.” (verse 3)
David’s charge to Solomon serves as a powerful reminder to us – the importance of God’s Word in our life. The Word of God guides our life. It is not just about following rules. It is about being obedience to our God who loves us. This obedience to God brings peace and prosperity, it also brings a deep sense of purpose.
David, despite his flaws, understands this. Before he leaves the earth, he has a chance to instruct Solomon one more time. And this is what he tells Solomon – to walk in obedience to God.
Consider for a moment, how seriously do we take the Word of God? How diligently do we follow God’s commands? How often we do seek his wisdom in our decisions?
Solomon commits to walk in obedience to God, as instructed by his father. Let us be like Solomon. (No, do not keep lots of wives, horses, and gold. Not those. See Deut 17:16-17.) Let his Word be our compass, guiding us in the right direction. Let his Word be our GPS, showing us the correct way. Remember to pass this on, to our children, to our disciples, to our mentees.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, thank you for the example of David and his wisdom. Help me to follow your Word with all my heart. Give me the strength to obey your commands and the wisdom to apply your principles in my life. May I be among the generation that leaves a godly legacy for those who follow.
