In our busy daily life, we are being pulled in many directions at the same time. We may be pressed to shift our priorities constantly. As times, we may feel distant from God or disconnected from God’s purpose.

Today, we read one very short song of ascents by David. Charles Spurgeon described Psalm 131 as “one of the shortest psalms to read, but one of the longest to learn.”

David begins by identifying pride as a problem. Pride can distract us away from God. Pride makes us think we can make it on our own, that we do not need God. David confesses that nothing is more important than God. He comes to God in humility.

He finds peace and solace in God. He likened himself as a weaned child to his mother. A newborn baby clings to the mother for milk. Once the baby is weaned, he no longer clings to the mother for food. Instead, he embraces his mother for love and companionship. That is the relationship David feels he has with God. He wants to be close to God not just for his protection and providence. He wants to be close to God not just because he is dependent on God. He wants to be close to God because he loves God.

Do you want to be close to God? Why do you want to be close to God?

I invite you to say this prayer.

My Father in heaven, thank you for reminding me that true contentment and peace come from you. Help me to humble my heart. Help me to let go of my pride and carnal ambition. I want to trust in your perfect care and provision. May I rest in your presence like a weaned child with his mother, knowing that you are always with me. Strengthen my faith and help me to place my hope in you alone.

I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
