My speech in an elocution contest during high school begins with “Happy is the man who acquired the ability to read when he is young.” Indeed, there is much joy and benefit to reading. Today, we are going to find an even greater blessing than mere reading.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible. It is beautiful in its structure. It is even more profound in its meditation on the Word of God. Today, we focus on the first 32 verses. These verses celebrate the blessings of living according to God’s laws.

“Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD.” (verse 1)

Verse 1 sets the tone with an emphatic declaration on the blessings that come from the law of God. It highlights the joy and fulfillment we get when we life a life aligned with God’s will.

The psalmist expresses his deep desire to understand and obey God’s decrees. He knows that when we devote ourselves wholeheartedly to the law of God, we find guidance and purity in life. In fact, commitment to God’s statutes is a source of strength and integrity. See verses 9 and 11 for examples.

The psalm later progresses to a more personal tone as he reflects on his struggles. He acknowledges that the word of God can strengthen him in his weariness and sorrow. (verse 28)

The latter verses in today’s reading resonate deeply with anyone experiencing hardship or weariness. The psalmist pleas for strength and revival through God’s Word. This reminds us of the comfort that the scripture provides in times of distress. By turning to God’s commandments, we find peace, we also find the fortitude to persevere.

The passage we read today encourages us to immerse ourselves in the Word of God, allowing it to shape their lives and lead us closer to God. It is a powerful testament to the joy, guidance, and strength found in God’s Word. It encourages us to seek God wholeheartedly, obey his commandments, and rely on his Word for transformation and resilience.

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, I thank you for your Word, which guides me, strengthen me, and bring me closer to you. Help me to seek you with all my heart and to live according to your commandments. In times of joy and sorrow, may your Word be my comfort and my strength. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
