Creative Common Zero.

Close your eyes and try to remember some of the most delicious food you have ever tasted. This should be something that ignites a spark of joy in you. Consider the taste, the aroma, the texture, the atmosphere, the flavour, and the presentation. Is it the sashimi you had in the Penang hotel? The char koay teow with three types of eggs in Penang, the steak you had together with your family after you come back from Australia, the nasi lemak from the packed food court, or the mango from your uncle’s orchard? Or is it a piece of Tupai King? (Speaking of food, I listed more examples than usual.)

The Psalmist uses this metaphor to describe the sweetness of God’s Word in today’s reading, which is Psalm 119:65-104.

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (verse 103)

Today’s reading beautifully captures the joy that comes from embracing and understanding God’s Word. The Psalmist does not see God’s commands as burdens but as precious treasures that brings delight and guidance. It is something that we appreciate, we cherish, and we savour.

How can we enjoy the Word of God? We can cultivate a better appreciation of the Word of God by meditating the Bible verses. Spend time reflecting on the scriptures. Let the Word sink in and reveal their deeper meaning. We receive true delight from reading the Bible, we get even greater joy in applying them in our lives. A heart of gratitude helps a lot too.

By cultivating a love and appreciation for God’s Word, we find direction and purpose in our lives. The sweetness of his commands will guide us through life’s challenges and lead us closer to him.

I invite you to say this prayer.

My Father in heaven, open my hearts to the beauty and truth of your Word. Let me find delight in reading, meditating, and living according to your precepts. Give me the wisdom to understand your commands and the will to faithfully follow them. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
