When I was in high school, I heard that the house of a Christian family is clean and neat. I did not know a lot of Christians then. I could not confirm it. When I grew up, I visited many families, Christians and non-Christians, most of them are clean and neat. Then I look at my own house. Hmm … is this really a Christian house? It is not very neat.
In 1 Kings 6, the building of the temple is proceeding in earnest. Solomon takes meticulous care of God’s instruction, giving attention to every detail. The temple is magnificent not because of its design or its value. Its significance is that it is the dwelling place for God.
The Bible tells us our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. If the temple of God, a physical building demands such care and attention to detail, how much more should we build the temple of the Holy Spirit? How much more should we work on it diligently and intentionally? We lay a solid foundation of faith. We surround it with walls of righteousness and truth. Our thoughts, our speech, our actions must reflect the glory of God. Our hearts should be filled with God’s presence. And we hold God’s presence with reverent awe.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, help me to build my life as a living temple for your glory. May my heart be pure and my actions righteous. Give me the wisdom to prioritize your presence in all that I do. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
