Greetings, my fellow Bible readers! We continue with the 2024 DUMC Bible Reading Plan. This week, we are going to read four chapters from 1 Kings and one from Psalms. These four chapters from 1 Kings chronicle the peak of Israel under Solomon and the fall of Solomon and the kingdom. Psalm 49 reminds us of the fleeting nature of worldly wealth.

In the four chapters of 1 Kings, we see the peak of Solomon’s reign. However, King Solomon slowly shifted from obedience and faithfulness to complacency and idolatry. The alliance he makes, the extravagant building projects he undertakes, and the turning to foreign gods serve as a sobering reminder of the consequences of straying from God’s commandments. If a man of such wisdom can fall, what more for ordinary folks like you and me? In chapter 12, the kingdom split into two. Whatever we do has consequences.

Psalm 49 contrasts the temporary nature of wealth and human achievement with the eternal value of wisdom. Indeed, no amount of riches can redeem a soul. Redemption comes only from God. We are encouraged to consider carefully where we place our trust.

As we read these passages, let us be encouraged to put our relationship with God above all else. Read about the life of Solomon and learn from the lessons. Seek wisdom from God and live our lives carefully and faithfully. I invite you to join me on this journey. Together, we read the Bible and seek to grow deeper in our understanding and commitment to God’s Word in the coming week.
