Greetings. We continue with the DUMC 2024 Bible Reading Plan. Today, we read 1 Kings 9. Solomon has completed the building of the temple (and the palace). Solomon dedicated it. Now, God responds.
God reaffirms his covenant with Solomon. However, we see God’s promises and blessings are bound to our obedience. God makes it clear that if Solomon and his descendants walk in integrity in obedience to God, then his throne will remain. However, if they turn away from God and worship other gods, there are dire consequences – Israel as a nation will be cut off from the land and the temple will become a byword among the nations.
This is a reminder for all believers to remain faithful to God’s commandments. It also reminds us that regardless of who we are, be it a king or a peasant, we need to be steadfast in our commitment to follow God.
Is there an area in our lives where we are getting lax? Is a bad habit or bad choice starting to chip away our faith in God? Have we started marrying many wives, acquiring many horses, and accumulating lots of gold and silver like Solomon? Those are the things God specifically told Solomon not to do.
I invite you to say this prayer.
My father, help me to remember that my relationship with you is built on obedience. Give me the strength to resist temptation and to walk in your ways. Help me to prioritize your kingdom above all else. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
