Weekend Encourager – Finding Strength in Suffering

It is an illness that has no cure. It is the marriage you cannot stand for one more day. It is the amputation of a leg. It is the loss of a loved one. It is the toxic working environment. It is the child who does not listen to you. It is the parents who always compare you to the other more successful relatives. It is the long night when you cannot get any sleep.

Suffering is inevitable. However, for Christians, it holds a profound purpose.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” (2 Cor 1:3-5)

Paul reminds us that God, the “Father of compassion and the God of all comfort”, comforts us in our troubles. This divine comfort is not just for our relief, but it also equips us to comfort others facing struggles. Through suffering, we grow in maturity, becoming God’s vessels of blessings and grace. We can offer hope and encouragement to those in pain.

Of course, we can pray for the suffering to stop and for the pain to go away. However, more than that, we should pray for God to give us strength to overcome the suffering and pain. Chuck Swindoll said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react.” Let us not act on our own. Let us depend on God and draw strength from God.

If When you are enduring hardship, remember that your experience is shaping you into a source of comfort for others. Your suffering is not in vain. It is a pathway to deeper empathy and stronger faith. Trust in God. Let his comfort flow through you to uplift those around you.
