When the last four kings of a nation reign for a total of about 22 years, you get the sense that something is not right.
Jehoahaz succeeded his father Josiah and reigned for 3 months. His elder brother, Jehoiakim took over and sat on the throne for 11 years. He is succeeded by his son Jehoiachin, who was king for 3 months. Zedekiah, another son of Josiah took the throne for 11 years.
As we read 2 Kings 24, we read about the fall of Judah. Persistent disobedience incurs God’s judgement. The ongoing sins of the people bring devastating consequences. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon lays siege to Jerusalem. He loots the treasures from the temple and captures key leaders, including King Jehoiachin. Judah lays in ruins. The people are exiled. This is a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of deliberately and continuously ignoring God’s ways.
Verse 3 tells us that all these are consequences of the sins that originate from as early as Manasseh’s time. It shows the depth of Judah’s rebellion and the fulfilment of God’s warning through the prophets.
2 Kings 24 calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we listen to God? Do we persist in our wayward paths? Judah’s exile reminds us that God’s patience is great. However, it has its limits. The consequence of sin can be devastating.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, I come before you in humility. I recognize the consequences of disobedience. Help me to seek your will and follow your commands. Lead me away from the destructive paths. Draw me closer to your presence. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
