Have you ever wondered what happens when an entire nation turns away from God? Jer 5 provides a sobering picture of a people who have abandoned righteousness and consequences that follow.
The prophet conveys God’s deep disappointment with Judah. Despite his countless acts of mercy, they people persist in their rebellion. They refuse to repent.
“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city.” The opening verse laments the reality that not even one righteous can be found.
Jer 5 highlights the widespread moral decay in Judah. The people had grown comfortable in their sin. They ignored God’s call to repentance. They failed to uphold justice and truth. The tragic result was a broken relationship with God and the impending judgement. We see that even in his anger, God’s desire is for his people to return to him.
The same call to repentance challenges us today to examine our lives and communities. Are we seeking truth and righteousness? Have we grown complacent? Have we turned a blind eye to injustice and sin? God’s mercy is still available. Is it not scary when God asks, “Why should I forgive you?” (verse 7) Repentance can lead to restoration.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, help me to be the person who seeks truth and justice. Forgive me when I stray from the path. Lead me back to you in humility and repentance. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
