For months, you have received blow after blow. You lost your job. Your wife went to heaven. Your son is 7500km away. You wonder whether it makes a difference to keep your faith in God.
Ps 92 offers encouragement. It reminds us of the blessings of staying rooted in God’s presence.
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God.” (verses 12 and 13)
The psalmist paints a clear picture of strength, vitality, and longevity. The palm tree thrives even in harsh and unfavourable conditions. The cedar of Lebanon is renowned for its durability and beauty. Both trees show what it means to be firmly rooted in God.
Ps 92 invites us to give priority to worship and to connect with God. A tree needs a consistent source of water to grow. A Christian needs regular time in prayer, Scripture, and fellowship to thrive spiritually. When we make God our dwelling place, we can endure life’s challenges and remain fruitful, even in old age (verse 14.)
We apply this psalm by starting with small steps. We begin with small and consistent habits. We give thanks to God, we worship him with joy, we trust him through every season. When we stay connected to the source of life, we grow in resilience and strength just as God promised.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, help me to stay rooted in you, help me to trust in your care and provision. May my life flourish list a tree planted in your courts, bearing fruit for your glory. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
