Weekend Encourager – Whither to go?

You are accepted to take your desired course by both your favourite universities. Which one will you pick? You are offered the overseas posting you have been working hard for, however, you just found out your wife is pregnant. Will you stay or will you go to China? You ask your son what he wants to be when he grows up, his answer is still firefighter. You are getting impatient for him to say a doctor. What will you do to “help him” make the right choice?

In life, we face with many choices. Some matter more than others as the consequences are more significant.

As Christians, we know God has a purpose in our lives. Some of us believe he lays down in the Bible how we should live, to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God. We are to love God, love our neighbours, and to be obedient. Some of us think God has a detailed plan down to the colour of the wall, the model of car, and breed of the dog. Instead of the next five years, there is a blueprint down to the minutes.

God can give us wisdom. God can give us guidance. However, we need to strike a balance between listening to God’s voice and being too dependent / irresponsible. We want to make sure we follow God’s will and bring glory to his name. We do not want to stray from the path. We also need to take initiative. We cannot say, God has not told me to move, so even when the light has turned green, I cannot move the car yet. We cannot say, I know Emma has been waiting for me to propose for 5 years but I have not seen a blue meteor and a red meteor in the sky on a Wednesday night yet. We cannot blame our indecision on God not giving us a clear sign we are looking for.

I believe God give us clear instructions in the Bible. We know how we should live our lives. If we are a keen student of the Bible then we know what God requires of us. I also believe that from time to time; God tells us very specific instructions on very specific events. We may feel no peace about an upcoming trip. Or you may feel utter and complete peace about a big decision. When we are close to God, we hear his voice clearly.

Is he going to tell you what to have for dinner tonight? Maybe, maybe not. Is he going to tell you to make a decision that will honour your parents? For sure.

Keep seeking his face. Keep seeking his wisdom.
