How do you see Jesus? A historical figure? Gigantic statues? The King of kings and the Lord of lords? The lamb upon the throne? The suffering servant? The sacrifice on the cross?
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (verse 8)
Rev 1 gives us a breathtaking vision of the majesty and authority of Jesus Christ, reminding us who he truly is. John is exiled on the island of Patmos. He encountered the glorious risen Christ, clothed in splendour, with eyes like blazing fire, voice like rushing waters, and a face shining like the sun! (Verses 13 to 16.) Christ declares himself as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. He holds the keys of death and Hades.
Rev 1 reassures us that Jesus is not only our Savior but also the sovereign Lord who rules in the past, the present, and eternity. He is with us, even in trials, just like he was with John in his isolation.
As we read Rev 1, reflect on Jesus’ power and majesty. Let the vision of Christ shape your prayers. Let it fuel your confidence in his ability to guide and sustain you through any challenge.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, you are the risen and reigning king. Help me to see your glory and trust in your eternal power. Strengthen my faith to follow you courageously. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
