Have you ever struggled to understand the Bible? Have you encountered passages that are difficult to understand? When you hear about the blood of the lamb, do you think about ovine body fluid? When some weird preacher presented some out of this world ideas, do you take it in lock, stock, and barrel because “it may be in the Bible”?
You are not alone. Biblical illiteracy – not knowing about the Bible or its teachings – is a growing challenge among Christians today.
Many believers have a Bible – be it on paper or an electronic version. It is not uncommon to have many Bibles. However, many Christians rarely read the Bible let alone study it. This lack of familiarity with God’s word can lead to many problems. We can easily get confused when we discuss or hear a topic being discussed. We may have a shallow faith, much like the seeds sown on stony grounds. And since we are not grounded on the Word, we are susceptible to false teachings. The scripture is vital for spiritual growth, providing wisdom, guidance, and a firm foundation for life.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Ps 119:105)
As individual Christians, we can play our part to reverse this trend. Start by committing to daily Bible reading. Just a few verses a day, coupled with reflection and meditation, can transform your understanding over time. Slowly expand it to a few chapters a day. Be a part of a Bible study group. You can learn alongside others and hold each other accountable. There are plenty of resources like study Bibles, commentaries, or dictionaries to help deepen your comprehension.
Share your love of the Bible with family and friends. Encourage conversations about faith. Teach children the stories and truths of the Bible. More importantly, live out biblical principles in your daily life. Make it a point to show others the power and relevance of God’s Word.

Father, help me to treasure your Word and grow in my knowledge of it. Equip me to share its truth with others. Help me to spread your light in a world that desperately needs it. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
