Do we know God’s heart for justice? How do we respond to his call for justice? Is it our responsibility to uphold justice?
Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. (Verses 3 and 4).
God’s concern for the vulnerable cannot be more any clearer than verses 3 and 4 in Ps 82. He expects that we reflect his justice in the world.
Ps 82 paints a heavenly courtroom where God rebukes corrupt rulers (the “gods”) for failing to uphold justice. These leaders have neglected their responsibility to protect the weak. They failed to ensure fairness for the poor and oppressed. The judgement of God is clear – he holds all of them accountable for their actions (or inactions).
The psalmist calls us to reflect God’s character by advocating for justice in our own lives. We do this through acts of compassion, supporting a fair system, or speaking out against wrongdoing. There are many in our society that need justice. The deaf Grab driver. The lovely, friendly, and innocent dog, Kopi. Those who are being discriminated against because of their ethnic groups or beliefs. Those who are victims of unfair distribution of resources. We are invited to be part of God’s mission to bring restoration to a broken world.
Look for opportunities to defend the vulnerable and voiceless in your community. Volunteer at a local shelter. Mentor someone in need. Support an organization that works for justice. In your daily life, strive to act with fairness, integrity, and compassion. Justice starts with you. It also can end with you.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, you are the defender of the weak and the judge of all the earth. Help me to reflect your heart for justice and to stand boldly for what is right. Use me to bring hope and healing to a world in need. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
