What comes to mind when you think about eternity? Streets of gold? No longer need to go to work?
“Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” (Verses 1 and 2)
Rev 21 offers one of the most beautiful and hopeful visions in the entire Bible – the new heaven and new earth. It gives us a glimpse of God’s ultimate plan – a future of restoration, joy, and communion with him forever.
John describes a world free of pain, suffering, and death. (I take solace that Kathleen is there now.) God dwells with his people. The separation caused by sin is no more. The promise of “no more tears” tells us that all brokenness will on that day be healed. (Just like my achy breaky heart.)
How can we apply this vision? Firstly, we live in hope. Knowing that this broken world is temporary, we have strength to face trials and tribulations. We can fix our eyes on the eternal joy that awaits. Secondly, live in the light. The new Jerusalem is a picture of God’s holiness and beauty. Let this inspire you to reflect his glory in your life today. Lastly, be the light. Share the good news. Invite others to share in this eternal promise by pointing them to Christ.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, thank you for the promise of a new heaven and new earth. Help me to live with hope, reflect your light, and share your love with others. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
