We have various levels of resources, including finances, skills, giftings, etc. However, we all have 24 hours a day. And our finances, however much we have, are limited. It follows that we should make beneficial use of the resources at our disposal.
To live faithfully, we must focus on what has eternal value. We want to invest our lives in what truly matters.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Mt 6:19-20)
Earthly pursuits often demand our attention, but they are temporary. As the song goes, earthly things have left me dry. Wealth, achievements, and material possessions will fade. Instead, let us fix our eyes on things with eternal significance – loving God, service people, sharing the Good News, and nurturing our relationship with God. These are the treasures that last forever.
To focus on what is important, we need to discern between urgent and eternal. Not every task or opportunity aligns with God’s purpose. Instead of accepting every invitation to serve and to volunteer, carefully examine your capacity. Make sure you do not stretch yourself too much. Put priority on prayer, reading and studying the Bible, and serving in ways that glorify him. By seeking his kingdom first (Mt 6:33), we align our hearts with what God values.
Even with limited resources, God can multiply our efforts when we trust him. We know about the boy with five loaves and two fish. What we offer to God can have eternal impact when placed in his hands. Let us be good stewards. Use our resources prudently and keep our eyes fixed on the things that matter most in eternity.
