Answer the Call

999, the MERS (the Malaysia Emergency Response Service) receives an average of 877,000 calls a month. Only 38% of them are emergency calls. Imagine the call agent receives a call and does not dispatch it. Or the emergency response team – be it the police, the fire fighters (please call 994), the ambulance, etc. received the dispatch but do not act on it. What happens to the people looking for help? They will be left hanging high and dry.

Now, consider this. Every time God hears a cry, he calls you or someone near you to do something about it. If you hear the call but choose not to answer it, what happens to the one crying for help?

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” (Heb 13:16)

We are called to live a life reflecting the heart of God – a heart full of compassion, generosity, and love.

Every day, we see opportunities to do good and share with those around us. Sometimes it is as simple as a word of encouragement (you will be surprised how much of a difference it can make), listening to someone’s struggles (you will be surprised how many are waiting to tell their stories), or helping a neighbour in need (you will be surprised how many are too shy to ask for help.) There are times to make a bigger sacrifice, like giving our time, resources, blood, or energy to help others in significant ways.

Whatever the opportunity, remember that every act of kindness is an offering that pleases God. When we help others, we not only meet their physical or emotional needs, but also show them God’s love and care. Our actions become a testimony of his grace at work in us. We help them to go one step closer to knowing and accepting Jesus.

You do not have to do everything. You cannot do everything. You can do something. Pray for God to open your eyes to the needs around you and to give you a willing heart to respond. Together, let us live out Heb 13:16. Let us honour God with our generosity, kindness, and love.

Is God calling you to answer a cry?
