In a former life (so to speak), I eagerly awaited the launch of the new Samsung Note / Galaxy every year. I would follow closely with all the updates, leaks (some valid, some not so valid) to understand the updates to be introduced in the new model. Year after year, I make an annual decision whether that year was the year I get the newest Samsung phone.
Samsung has since merged both the Note and Galaxy series. And I also follow the launch of iPhones even through I would never have bought it. I have used an iPhone 3 for a few days when my late wife and son was in the middle of changing phones. I quite like it, but I love Android more.
I still follow the new products in the market albeit in decidedly less vigour. I bought a mi 13T Pro for my birthday in 2023 and it is a good phone. It has 1 TB storage. I want to use it for as long as possible. Unless I go crazy and decide to get an S25 UItra but I digress.
Do we replace our phones to the latest model the market yet just because of some superficial zhushes? Do we pre-order a product not even available yet just because of FOMO? You say I work hard so why can’t I get something good for myself? Why can’t I get the Telsa 3 as the weekend car? Why can’t I have a few Richard Mille watches? What is wrong with a RM15k gaming notebook? If you can afford it and you do not already have 13 old phones at home, go for it. More power to you!
However, I remember there are many who needs help out there. I have been without a job for close to one year. I am trying not keep my expenses to the bare necessities. Now that I am trying to cut out the sweetness in my life (at lease insofar as the sugar intake is concerned), I do save some money on the juices, ice-creams, donuts, chocolates, etc. However, I find that eating healthy has its own cost. If I do not spend too much, I have some capacity to help others.
I guess to each its own. However, I am still learning to be a good steward. Your thoughts?
