Following Jesus is not a one-time event. It is not saying a prayer, or signing a document, or pushing a button, and then, something takes effect. It is a daily, continuous, deliberate choice we make.
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” (Lk 9:23-24)
You have heard Christianity is a relationship with God. That may be true. However, Christianity is also very practical. It is not just an engagement of the mind. It is not about reaching level 80 of faith. Jesus calls us to follow him. He means more than believing, he means discipleship. What do we need to do?
One, to deny ourselves, this means putting God’s will above our own. It means to say no to selfish desires and choosing his ways over our own comfort. It means trusting his plans are better than ours, even when we do not like them.
Two, to take up our cross is to embrace the sacrifices that come with following Jesus. The cross is both a symbol of suffering AND victory. Carrying our cross means standing firm in faith, even when it is hard. It is enduring challenges, resisting temptation, and choosing what is right over what is easy.
Three, to lose our lives is not to find a way to the rooftop and take a leap. It is no longer living for ourselves, but for God. We let go of control and submit everything to God. In this way, we find true life – a life full of his joy, peace, and purpose!
Following Jesus is not always easy, but it is always worth it. When we lay down our lives for him, we gain the abundant life he promises. Let us walk with God, trusting that he is leading us to something greater.
