Have you ever felt you have no desire to praise God? You could be in the middle of a church celebration, listening to a worship song while driving to work, or standing on the mountain top in awe of God’s creation, and you are thinking, I do not know how to begin to praise him.
Let us read what David, a man after God’s own heart has to say about praising God. Psalm 103:1 says, “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.”
We see that praise does not always come naturally. Sometimes, we need to command our souls to praise God. It is not about having the perfect words or the most eloquent prayers. It is about turning our hearts towards him, even when we feel inadequate.
Praise is not limited to singing or speaking or music or dancing. It is a posture of the heart. It is gratitude for his forgiveness, awe at his creation, and wonder at his love. When we do not know how to praise him, we can start by simply remembering what he has done. In Psalm 103, David continues to list God’s blessings, his forgiveness, his healing, his redemption, and crowning us with love and compassion.
If you find it hard to praise God, begin with thanksgiving. Reflect on his goodness in your life, Speak his name aloud. Sing, even if you cannot hit the high notes. Write down his blessings. Or, be like David – talk to your soul and remind yourself of who he is.
You do not need to have it all figured out. God does not demand perfection in our praise – he desires authenticity. Even if your praise feels small or imperfect, offer it to him. He delights in every whisper, every moment of surrender, and every effort to honour him.
Let your praise be simple, heartfelt, and real. He is worthy to be praised.
