Has following Jesus become too comfortable? Think about the possibility. Some of us may have crafted a faith that fits neatly into our lives and routines – as long as we are comfortable, we go to church on Sunday, we attend small groups, we join prayer meetings, and we do the occasional devotional. Is this what Jesus meant when he told us to take up our cross and follow him?

The early Christians faced life-threatening persecution. Being a Christian is putting one’s life on the line. They gave up all to step into an unknown future to share the Gospel. Their faith was anything but safe. Yet today, we often give priority on comfort, safety, security, convenience. Are we missing something?

True discipleship requires us to step out of our comfort zone. It means forgiving when it is hard, giving when it hurts, speaking up when it is risky. Jesus did not promise an easy life; he promised a meaningful life.

Has out pursuit of comfort started to dull our spiritual growth? Are so focused on keep ourselves comfortable and safe that we have forgotten to trust God with the unknown?

Do you remember the last time your faith cost you something? What did we last take a risk on for the sake of the Gospel? When you put money into the offering bag last time, was there a split second of hesitation because you thought it was one note too many? Perhaps it is time to rethink what is means to follow Jesus. A safe faith might just be the riskiest choice of all.
