Walking in Light #3 – Guarding the Heart

My dear friends,

The light of Christ shines not only through what we do, but also through what we guard within. A heart left open to bitterness, careless word, or temptation will soon grow dim. That is why Scripture tells us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23).

Guarding your heart does not mean shutting it off from people. It means choosing carefully what you let take root inside. If resentment plants itself there, it grows thorns. If envy slips in, it clouds the joy God gives. But when we let his Word dwell richly, when we pray in the quiet hours, when we let gratitude be our soil – then his light has room to shine.

A few days ago, I pulled off the grass growing along the cracks between the tiles in the car porch. It looked so much cleaner.

Guarding your heard is like tending a small garden. You cannot stop every weed from appearing, but you can pull them out before they spread. So, it is with the thoughts and desires that knock at the door of your heart.

My friends, guard your hearts not with fear, but with love. Keep them open to God, and he will keep them strong. For the heart kept in his care will never lose its light.
