David did not kill Saul in the cave. Joseph refused the advances of Potiphar’s wife. They listened to their conscience.
Conscience is a quiet voice within us – a compass God planted in every human heart. It is gentle in its whispers, nudges, and warnings. However, if we are not careful, its whisper is easily drowned out in this world full of noise.
The Bible said conscience can be seared as with a hot iron (1 Tim 4:2). Ignored long enough, the warnings grow faint. Excuses grow louder. What once troubled us no longer stirs us.
When we snooze conscience like an alarm, we trade the Spirit’s gentle checks for the comfort of self-justification. We tell ourselves, it is not that bad, everyone does it, and God will understand.
Every compromise leaves a mark. Every excuse makes it easier to wander further from God’s truth.
A tender conscience is a gift. It keeps us humble. It keeps us teachable. It keeps us from straying from the path. It makes David cried, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” (Ps 139:23)
Do not harden it. Do not silence it. Heed it. Listen to it.
When conscience is alive, the heart stays aligned with God’s way. When the heart stays aligned with God’s way, the feet walk steady on the straight and narrow.
